Evil Dead
2013 Remake
Directed by: Fede Alvarex

Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only one is left to fight for survival.

As a huge fan of The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (same movie, more camp), and Army of Darkness I was a bit concerned when I heard that they were re-making this classic. There were already two versions of this film. The original, which took a more horror route - and part 2 (Dead by Dawn) which took a more campy route and led to one of the most amazing movies ever - Army of Darkness. I am not a fan of remakes, especially when the movie that is being remade is pretty much perfect as it stands.

When I heard that Sam Raimi was involved, I got a little less skeptical. When I then found out that Bruce Campbell was not only involved as well, but also was endorsing the movie, I knew I was going to have to bite the bullet and go and see a remake.

I now understand why this movie was remade. Back for the first two, Raimi and Campbell weren't all that well known and the movie was about as low budget as you can get. In fact, I remember reading an article in which Campbell said that the cast and crew could not even afford a pack of gum between them. The plot of the movies were excellent and unique, so why not do it all over again when you have a large budget to put behind it?

Well, it works. Whether you have seen the originals (which I highly recommend) or not, chances are if you're a horror buff, like the originals, or even just like Raimi's work, you'll like this. It's not going to win any Oscars, but for what it is it's an excellent film.

They took a scarier route than the other films did, had plenty of gore, and many scenes that will make you wince. The characters weren't amazing and there were some questions during the movie that went unanswered, but it's a gorefest horror movie and one needs to try to not think so much about all of that during that type of movie.

All in all, I really liked it and think it worked out very well. This is one of the very few remakes I would recommend seeing - but do see the other three as well (preferably first).

My rating: Four out of five snails.
