I spent the majority of my day reading legal topics in preparation for my new job. Interesting if unexciting.

I said no to a fiction submission today that I liked on a conceptual level but found unappealing in structural execution. I welcomed a revised version of the story, as I thought the writer had something interesting to say that I could see in Lone Star Stories. I hope I see the story again.

On my own submissions front, I received a rejection that puzzled me. An editor stated that my story about psychotic, intelligent elk was not speculative. If any of you know of intelligent elk (nice ones, preferably), I want to meet them! So would my dad, a former field biologist. I don't usually do so, but I asked for a bit of background on her reasoning. Perhaps she meant to say something other than the word "speculative." I'm trying not to grin, as I write this, but, heck, I just can't help myself.
