Marriage is love.

25 Years Ago This Month on the Pop Charts

The month of May, 1982 was the month I graduated from high school. Actually, I graduated from high school 25 years ago this coming Tuesday.

In that month, there were three pieces of music that topped the pop singles chart:

"I Love Rock and Roll," by Joan Jett and the Heartbreakers

"Titles" by Vangelis (the running in slow motion music from 'Chariots of Fire')

"Ebony & Ivory" by Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney

Three iconic songs in one month. The month of the Class of '82.

The first was a rebel anthem, the second was an iconic title theme that is a brilliant combination of tradition and modern technology, and the final was a schmaltzy, yet still wonderfully fun, tribute to the richness of human harmony in the midst of difference.

I can't think of a better way to describe my tweener class of high school graduates. We were born in 1964, the last year of the Baby Boom and/or the first year of Generation X according to the people that decide those things. We were the infants of the Viet Nam War, the children of the Cold War, Watergate, the Bicentennial, Carter's Malaise, the Iran Hostage Crisis, and Reagan's New Day in America. We were one of the last classes to go all the way through school without have touched a computer.

Rebels, a link from a past rich with tradition and a future marked by technology's grip on daily life, stumbling hopefully toward a world where we are trying to move toward a more "perfect harmony."

Three compositions...25 years later...they still define us...I hope.
