Marriage is love.

Isaiah Washington Please Just Shut the Hell Up

In an interview in the Houston Chronicle, recently not-renewed for Grey's Anatomy co-star Isaiah Washington engaged in a little hometown pity party for himself.

According to unchallenged reports from the set of the medical drama, last October, in an altercation with Patrick Dempsey, Mr. Washington is reported to have said, "I'm not your little faggot like T.R.," clearly referring to co-star T.R. Knight, who was as of that time, not yet out of the closet. Multiple sources confirmed that MANY on the set heard the argument and the slur against Mr. Knight.

Earlier this month, Mr. Washington, who had apologized publicly, attended anger management classes and done a PSA on tolerance at ABC's insistence, was informed that his contract was not being renewed for next season.

Since that time, Mr. Washington has been taking every opportunity to stick both feet in his mouth up to the hip.
He was recently quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle has having said the following in an interview:

"Maybe for 50 years and the history of media and television I represent something that's supposed to not exist...This happened to Malcolm X, this happened to Paul Robeson -- this misconception can happen to any man of power that loves himself and wants to spread that love and that humanity throughout the world."

I find it fascinating that Mr. Washington compares himself to the two gentlemen. Somehow I strongly doubt that Mr. Washington's name will appear when historians set out the roll call of great 20th and 21st African-American leaders who were subjected to prejudice and hate. But also, what the heck is that "spreading the love" crap all about? Since when was spouting slurs in anger spreading "love and humanity throughout the world"?

In the Chronicle interview, Mr. Washington adopts yet another tactic of those caught red-handed, or red-tongued in this case...blame the victim. His talk with his hometown paper is little more than a screed against Mr. Knight and ABC. He accuses Mr. Knight of grandstanding in his role as victim and, more seriously, of lying when, in an interview on the Ellen Degeneres Show, Knight said "He referred to me as a faggot...Everyone heard it."

Washington, who originally denied that he had used the word at all, now says that he used the term "in an argument with Patrick Dempsey," apparently assuming that Knight was claiming he was called a "faggot" to his face. Knight never made that claim, merely noting that he HEARD the slur, as did others on the set, and that it was clearly directed at him. If it couldn't have been overheard, how exactly does Mr. Washington think the story got out in the first place? Noone has ever alleged that Dempsey went public with it...He's been silent as the grave about the whole thing.

Washington now claims that Knight should have been fired for making such a fuss and creating an uncomfortable working environment. Yeah...those subordinates who cry foul when a boss fondles them, or the staff person who takes umbrage at being called a "n----r" can really make the workplace unpleasant for the man, can't they?

Is Washington splitting hairs? Race baiting? Just dumb as a box of rocks?

According to the reporter in Houston, Washington concluded the interview by saying that he made three errors in judgment: "believing the cast of Grey's Anatomy were like family; believing I had the freedom to express myself with family and that we could resolve our issues; and trusting ABC was going to take care of me."

THOSE were his only errors in judgment?

Notice he doesn't mention using the slur as an error in judgment, or repeating it backstage at an awards show in front of the entire cast to the embarrassment of ABC, his producers and the cast, or comparing himself to Malcolm X and Paul Robson...

Well, let's see...I guess what he's suggesting is that within our families we should be "free" to call our brothers "faggots" without there being any consequences. Um...just for the record, no. He also assumes that ABC couldn't tell from a two minute conversation with him that his well-orchestrated public remorse was, well, full of it.

Now at least that's not a secret anymore.

Fork.
Done.
Later, Dr. McMoron. On your way out, don't let the door knob hit you where the Good Lord split you.
