Drawing in the Dirt

Yup, we spent the day drawing dirt. Or rather, the layers of dirt in the sidewall of the first two long trenches we dug at Hof. It took Steve and I a little while to get into the swing of things and get our system working, but now that we have it down we will be able to draw more profiles in the same amount of time.

Overcast days like today turn out to be better for seeing the trench sidewalls because the clouds diffuse the light. On nice days, with strong sunlight, we find it much harder to distinguish color differences in the soil.

Profiling all day makes for an uneventful time so I donīt have much to talk about right now. Nature gave us a chilly, overcast day. I left the house without swimsuit, towel and change of clothes so no hot tub for me this evening.

The machine Iīm using to make this entry has an Icelandic version of Windows on it, and several Icelandic characters on the keyboard. These keys occupy the positions of other characters so typing can be difficult.

It sounds like tomorrow that we will take our one trench all the way through the earlier of the houses at Hof. We need a better profile of whatīs going on there, and need some material to date - something like charcoal or bone.
