All done. We spent the day backfilling trenches: a few by backhoe, and a bunch by hand. Even the backhoe ones required that we move the cut sods back on top of the trench, though, and tromp them down and rake dirt around them. We had rain and mist and a cold breeze all day, but the work kept us pretty warm. We finished at 5:15, so we had enough time to catch one last hot pot session.

Overall, we have done a lot with pushing remote sensing and using it to detect buried turf structures located underground and invisible from the current surface. Although we found something particularly interesting at Glaumbaer, it now seems to be the case that the museum there will make it known later, so don't worry about watching for an article for a while yet.

This will be the last journal entry until Sept. 1, at which point I will add a few notes about what we see and do during this upcoming week, when Shelley and I drive around the island in our rented car. We plan to stay at the Icelandic farm equivalent of B&Bs, or commercial hotels, depending on what we can find. This is one vacation where we are not camping, although doing so is rather popular here amongst the Icelanders.

We'll see many of you back in the States soon, and will be glad to get back to our pets and warm LA climate.

-Ken
