I'm running into the I'm Not A Writer thing again.

I've been reading a lot of romance/adventure type books lately, but none of them have been fully satisfying. I'm becoming resigned to the idea that, if I really want a story featuring the type of passionate partnership I'm looking for, I'm going to have to write it myself.

I don't have time to set aside for writing. There are so many things to be taken care of, preferably before the baby arrives. And the story I'm looking for is a novel, which is kind of intimidating, considering that "Flow of Time And Water" is the first completed story I've ever written over 2500 words. Plus, since I'm Not A Writer, a novel would be a lot harder to sell, since publishers usually look for potential track record before signing an author.

Still, over the past couple of days, I've found myself spending hours outlining, delineating character relationships, sketching in backstory, questioning motivations and creating place-holder MacGuffins. I'd be driving into town, and I'd turn the radio off because one of my antagonists just showed a different facet of her character and I wanted to see how it affected her relationship with her rival.

I have no idea if this is actually going to go anywhere. (See, John -- I had a vested interest in asking you about staying motivated/coming back to your 7-year novel.) Who knows? After all, the basis of the story first germinated in a couple of vignettes I wrote when I was living in Hollywood in the late 80s, so some day a novel may yet come to fruition.

In other news, SciFi has picked up Battlestar Galactica for 13 episodes. Ron Moore says that they're going to keep with the reality and darkness of the miniseries, trying to avoid the "planet of the month" feel of the original. They don't say that they've signed Jamie (Apollo), but I'm hoping they do. They've mentioned Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katie Sackoff (Starbuck) and Tricia Helfer (#6), as well as Grace Park (Boomer) in a different release, so it's looking good. (Yes, Shawn, I know we've got to get that DVR.)
