The Program on International Policy Attitudes did a series
of surveys
regarding the awareness of the American public.

Sadly, it appears as though a large percentage of people who wanted Bush to stay in office based that support on information that was false:

  • Half of Bush supporters still think Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and another quarter think Iraq at least had a major WMD development program.

  • 75% of Bush supporters still think Iraq was providing "substantial" support to al-Qaeda (with 63% believing that clear evidence of this has been found.)

  • Only 31% of Bush supporters are aware that most people in the world were opposed to our invasion of Iraq. (and 57% believe that most people in the world would favor his re-election.)

  • Majorities of Bush supporters believe he favors the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, a treaty banning land mines, signing the Kyoto Treaty, and membership in the International Criminal Court.

Combine this with the stories of destruction of Democratic registration forms, intimidation at the polls, and problems with electronic voting machines, and I am feeling cynical and very, very tired.

I can actually be somewhat philosophical about the next four years. After all, it isn't that long a period of time. But when I think about the probably course of the Supreme Court, I wilt with despair.

Circle of influence, I keep reminding myself. Concentrate on what you actually have control over: creating a home and family to protect and nurture our son.

But I still want to take a nap and wake up to find a better world.
