Okay.

It's three days until the wedding. I know I haven't been posting as regularly as some people would like me to, but things get busy. Plans for the wedding are coming down to the wire.

At this very moment, there's a growing stain next to my desk where a cup of coffee decided to fall. That was my entire plan to keep moving this morning.

At this very moment, my entire family (save for my brother) is somewhere over the Midwest. They'll be in Burbank at 3:00, after a brief layover in San Francisco.

At this very moment, my brother is getting on a plane in Virginia, to come out here and be my best man.

At this very moment, I have a ton of work to do in order to make sure that my position is covered here throughout next week, when I'm out of the office on the honeymoon.

And at this very moment, members fom the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO) have walked through our front door, announcing a surprise inspection of the Hospital. I've had to cancel two meetings I was supposed to be at this morning in order to make sure things are up to snuff around here.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with JCAHO (pronounced JAY-koh, and not to be confused with J-Lo, A-ko, or Maaco), they're the closest thing that hospitals have to the boogeyman. Every health care facility undergoes a JCAHO inspection every three years, which is a complete top-to-bottom look at policies and procedures, staffing, recordkeeping... everything. Normally, these inspections take close to a year to prepare for, between making sure everything is kosher and improving on the comments they made from the last inspection. If you pass, it's all good. If you fail, well... problems can range from raising of insurance rates, to bad press, to losing the ability to work with Medicare. Seeing as how a good majority of our patients work through Medicare, losing that is pretty much a direct path to bankrupting the Hospital.

Our last major JCAHO inspection was in February of 2001, meaning our next major one will be in February of 2004.

Today, however, they decided to spring a surprise visit on us, something which is within their power but not all that common. I still have no idea why they decided to show up, but right now everyone is scrambling to make sure everything's in the right place. The stress level is through the roof, and that's for people who don't have family flying into town today for their wedding.

ARGH!
