Cleaning human skulls isn't any big deal. The first one actually came apart as I took it out of a big plastic bag to separate the bone from the dirt it was packed in, and which filled it. The second one, as you can see below, was pristine and had quite a strong jawbone.

In both cases, though, this may have been the first time that anyone had brushed their teeth. It's interesting to see where teeth got lost early enough in life that the resulting hole overgrew with bone. Wisdom teeth came in at awkward angles, and one jaw had a small abcess and bad gum lines that suggest periodontal disease. It's good that we have dentists these days.

Working in the lab with other people around to talk to while cleaning finds makes for an enjoyable way to pass the day -- much more so than sitting alone in a cubicle with a computer for the same amount of time. Same goes for tea time -- people come over from the other labs (wet wood conservation and general conservation) in the late morning and then again in the late afternoon and we all sit around for 15 minutes and chat about various things.

No one is optimistic about me making the connection from Gatwick to Heathrow airports in only 3.5 hours on the way home at the end of the trip. I guess I'll have to see about changing the itinerary. It takes some 45 minutes on the Gatwick Express train to get into London to switch to the underground to get to the Heathrow Express terminal, then 30 minutes to get to Heathrow itself. So, assuming the flight from Italy arrives on time, I'd have to get the bags, go through customs and immigration, do the train shuffle, then hope to get in line early enough at Heathrow to catch the flight.

When I scheduled that bit I forgot about customs and immigration lines. It might be possible to take a shuttle bus or taxi directly from one airport to the other. Anyone out there want to research airport-to-airport shuttle possibilities for me and send an e-mail with the results?

The off-site lab where many finds are processed, but not the ones from St. Leonard's.

Alas, poor ________, you have not brushed your teeth!
