a grand(iose) sewing adventure

After completely loosing my grip on sanity, I decide I need something to sew.

It begins

This will most likely be our last (at least for a while) Pirate Tourney. So why not do what we've been threatening to do every year? Really bring out our inner pirate

Here's a list for each of us:
Hope's pirate garb...

  • a black velvet corset
  • white blouse (will use my italian chamise)
  • crimson linen skirt
  • yellow silk over skirt
  • stripey stockings
Bob's pirate garb... Jessie's pirate garb...
  • red and black linen 4-part t-tunic dress
Sam's pirate garb...
  • red and black linen 4-part t-tunic

I ordered the hat, feathers and coat pattern (J.P. Ryan) from James Townsend & Sons. It was my first order with them and let me say it won't be my last! Their customer service has been sterling and the pattern got here in 2 days!

The remaining items: black linen, red linen, yellow dupioni, trim, buttons, black velvet and stripey socks have been ordered from other online merchants. Yes, I could have made a road trip to the garment district but when? I needed these things now! The only thing I haven't ordered is the red satin for the sashes. I think I'll get that locally.

Friday I made a custom corset pattern and cut it out of 2 layers of cotton duck, sewed the channels and inserted the boning. For boning I'm using really thick cable ties (175 pound test).

Saturday, I made up a toile for the coat and tried it on Bob. Had to resew it with smaller seam allowance (3/8) but it fit. I think it's going to look sooooo nice!

Tonight I cut out the body and sleeve pieces from the cut red velvet I had left over from his 12th night garb from years ago. It has a diamond pattern cut in it and I'm sure my attempts to make the pattern match at the seams failed. Oh well. I had to cut one sleeve piece twice but I think I will still have enough fabric.

I still can't believe I'm doing this.
