Dispatches from the City of Angels

I'm a writer and humorist living in and writing about Los Angeles. You can catch my novel LOSING CLEMENTINE out March 6 from William Morrow. In the meantime, feel free to poke around. Over at my website you can find even more blog entries than I could fit here, as well as a few other ramblings. Enjoy and come back often.

It'll make you happy to be average

Is there anything more fascinating than finding out something you thought would be glamorous is actually creepy and awful?

I am now addicted to this website: http://www.livejournal.com/users/elysesewell/

(Helpful user note: The main page is mostly just photos or the first few lines of the posts. To keep reading each individual entry, click on the "read more" links.)

It's a blog kept by a former contest of "America's Next Top Model" who has gone on to have, what appears to be, a pretty successful career in Hong Kong. A blessing and a curse, it would seem.

Photo shoots in porn theaters, evil Russian models stealing your food, your apartment building catching on fire, blood-inducing glittery eyeshadow... And all reported with remarkably good humor, which just makes it all the more readable.

And if the voyeuristic joys weren't enough, you get to think to yourself in complete honesty, "Thank God I'm not a six-foot-tall, 100-pound, stunningly beautiful woman or I too might have to live in a flooded hovel that electrocutes me when I step out of bed. But for the grace of God go I..."

It's really too much fun for words.
