Ashley Ream
Dispatches from the City of Angels

I'm a writer and humorist living in and writing about Los Angeles. You can catch my novel LOSING CLEMENTINE out March 6 from William Morrow. In the meantime, feel free to poke around. Over at my website you can find even more blog entries than I could fit here, as well as a few other ramblings. Enjoy and come back often.

Reason #493 Why I Love L.A.: Dia de los Meurtos

Halloween is for amateurs and - if you live in L.A. - drag queens. But Dia de los Meurtos (Day of the Dead), that's for really playing with the ghosts.

Every year, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, resting place of luminaries from Cecil B. DeMille to Johnny Ramone, gets down to the business of welcoming back lost souls to visit the living. Altars, drumming, dancing, blessing, eating, praying, fire, incense, music, calaveras.

It seems to work. At least a few of the gawkers, worshippers, drinkers and prayers looked like they'd spent some time on the other side. You should try it. In the meantime, pictures.
