Plain Banter
. . . lies about science fiction, and everything else.

When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer

What it's about, and what it's not.

Presumably you've found your way here because I am a writer of genre fiction. I suppose, then, that most of the bits in this blog ought to be about reading, writing and other aspects of genre fiction. That's mostly what it will be about, but I've looked at some other writers' blogs and many of them are pretty boring.

A lot of writers' blogs tell you on a daily basis how many pages the writer wrote today, what they sent off in the mail, that rejection that just came in from Asimov's and, oh goody, what mood they're in and music they're listening to right now. That's not even interesting to other writers, I think. This is not going to be a blog like that. Some of the blogs that purport to be "writers' journals" are actually a day in the life of Joe Blow neo-pro. We learn what the writer had for breakfast, what a bitch the day job was, what the kids said they did in school, and, say, did you catch that great football game? This is not going to be that sort of blog, either, although Real LifeŽ will undoubtedly intrude from time to time.

So what's it all about, then, if I'm not going to tell you about my day-to-day writing progress or family life? I intend to write about subjects of interest to the science fiction and fantasy audience. While some of this may be of interest to other writers, I hope that you don't have to be a writer to appreciate most of it. Sometimes I may write about aspects of writing; sometimes I may draw your attention to something decent to read. Jokes, books, quotes, stories in the news -- almost anything is fair game.

Well, that's the plan. Let's see how I do. When I run out of topics, who knows what sort of crap I'll wind up writing about?
