Plain Banter
. . . lies about science fiction, and everything else.

When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer

Olympic Moments, part 15

The judging in Men's Gymnastics. It's been awful. In the men's all-around competition, a Korean athlete is beaten out by American Paul Hamm for the gold, but the judges erroneously assumed a lower starting score for the Korean, based on degree of difficulty. After a protest, the judges admit their error, but the damage is done and the American keeps the gold medal. Then, last night, in the individual apparatus competition, a Russian athlete gets a low score for a fabulous routine, and the crowd boos continuously for 10 minutes, holding up the event. The judges huddle, then release a "revised" score for the Russian, bumping him up a bit (into fourth place, out of the medals, though).
