Plain Banter
. . . lies about science fiction, and everything else.

When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer

Anlab Quirk

I know the annual Asimov's and Analog readers' polls should open up for voting soon, but the ballots don't appear yet on their websites. But we don't let things like that deter us, do we?

No, I googled for the address of last year's ballot, thinking I could figure out the URL of this year's before they post it to the webpage. It didn't work; this year's ballots aren't there yet, when I adjust the URL for the current year.

But, oh sweet serendipity, I discovered this. Some guy with lots of time on his hands made an interesting observation about the Anlab awards: "And then there was a stranger phenomenon that my analysis unveiled: the shorter the title, the higher a story tended to rank. This correlation was strong, far beyond random chance..."

It so happens that my only published piece in Analog this year is titled "Dibs." Jeez, they might as well hand over the award right now.
