Kay came to see me today at work. I took a break, and sat with her for a few minutes, and showed her my three 'proto-types' of the programs that I have finished. She was delighted with them, even if we made a few changes. After she left, one of the crew asked me who that woman was that sat with me, and I told him she is the one getting married soon, and I am doing those programs I had shown him earlier. His remark was, "How old is she?" I replied, "59 or 60, I think, why?" "Isn't she too old to be getting married?" I then said, "how old do you think she will be next year, if she doesn't get married?" These two people had both been married previously, for thirty years or so. Both lost their spouses to cancer, within 5 years ago. They met at the place she works, he a loyal customer. I have known Kay for over 20 years, she worked where I applied for the same job that I still hold today. She also still works there. We have both been transferred around a bit, and have not worked together for a long time. Her kids babysat mine, and now mine babysit her grandkids. We are more family than friends. I was in fact with her the day her Husband died at home. Not a thrilling experience, but I was so glad that I was able to head right over that morning when she said he was acting strange, and he had a doctors appointment in a couple hours, but she wanted me there, so I could keep her company. He was in bed when I arrived, and came out to the kitchen, and said he heard my voice, and wanted to see me. We all sat and talked, and he ate a bit of breakfast. He told Kay that he "needed a hug" so she went to him, and embraced. He then stiffened up, and slid off his chair, and we, nor the paramedices could revive him. He was to start the chemotherapy and radiation process the very next week. I was glad that I was there to help with the phone calls, and many other things that day. I was also glad he went that way, instead of suffering through all of the procedures, and us just watching him fade away. This is so much easier on me anyway, having gone through both of those. Back to my story about the kid asking about Kay. He then says to me, she kind of looks like that manager from the Canyon Park store, in a way, except this lady is younger looking than that lady is. I just laughed at him, and said, "see what being in love will do to an old lady, young man? That is indeed Kay, from Canyon Park right there. You are as young as you feel" Now I am printing 3 copies of the final product, and tie them together, and let her see them, before I print 75 of them. This printer is probably 5 years old, I might get a new one out of it. YAY! |
