Attitude Adjustment Needed?

I am talking about my attitude, not anyone elses. I think that I have gotten very defensive-not sure if that is the word. I guess, feeling put upon at work. Not a good thing to happen to someone whose primary job desciption is "other duties as assigned".

I don't think that it is the particular duties that bother me. It is how some are given to me. The most recent spreadsheet is an example. The detailee was given it to do. Then when she was reassinged, I was explicitly told-all you need to do is fill in the numbers. Well, that is what I did. Four tries later, and I lost track of the number of corrections, I think my manager is finally happy with it. Oh, and the spreadsheet the detailee did, she locked it in such a way, I couldn't use it. But it was my errors.

Spoke with DH about this-several ideas are now being put into use. First no matter what, I am given a project, even if it is 'prestarted' it is now MINE! End of story. This is a mental adjustment on my part. When I was working on the above spreadsheet, I didn't 'own' it. I need to own the projects from now on. OK, nobody every said that I learned things quickly or had business common sense!

The second idea is a CYA idea that I haven't really done much although I talked about it. I now have a small notebook dedicated to 'assignments'. I will take that with me whenever I go to the other offices and meetings. If I am given an assignment, I will write it down in there along with any pertinent info. When I get to my desk, I will write an email to the assigning person to verify all the information and get their ok on my understanding. Should clear up some 'errors' I am getting hit with.

The last thing that bothers me, I can't change. I am primary back up for the division secretary. END OF DISCUSSION. Even when the other secretary is available, I am to be the one to cover the division. The problem occurs when the division secretary thinks that she has told me she is going to be on vacation and she hasn't. And then I get and email from my manager that says," ...is going to be out tomorrow and next week. You are to cover the office and I expect you to be here." My reply was " Thank you for advising me. I expect to be here too."

Oh well, I can't change that one, so, accept what I can't change and work around it.

Everyone, have a wonderful Fourth of July! And stay safe!!
