Memories---In The House.

Dear friend sent me a url in which one can find out a lot about music from a given date. There are birthdays, and what was number one on the date entered. So into the chopper went my day of entry.

Shortly before my early September day this summer will be the 20th anniversary of the last time I attended the Concord Jazz Festival. Indeed it takes place at the Concord Pavilion and I remember several summers of attending it and being well aware of the area being on the solar-enhanced doorstep of the Central Valley.

One year it featured the Woody Herman Herd, and after their set in came another drummer and piano player while retaining the rest of the big band, minus Mr. Herman. This was the backing for Rosemary Clooney. Also featured as guest soloist for the set was tenor sax Scott Hamilton. Certainly not the ice skater, but his cool solos were elegant as crossing the Bay to San Fran and losing the Concord oven.

But I seem to remember even The City being hot, as I roamed around before the evening shows, with shards of a mighty Baja system bedeviling the state down south flexing into the Bay Area charm.

Ms. Clooney opened with "Come On 'a My House", or maybe a verse, then quipped something to the effect of making a few audience members happy before she featured her current standards work on, yes, the Concord label. That song, according to the web site, was number one in the U.S. on the day of my birth.

And she and the assembled forces made the passing of another hour of age most enjoyable!
