She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

A Pair of Geeks in Their Natural Habitat

So Ken and I got up this morning (late) and promptly ended up in the study, each of us on a computer. If someone had taken a picture, it would have been titled “A Pair of Geeks in Their Natural Habitat”. Heh. Just workin’ on stuff. Trying to get caught up on e-mail, for example. Getting all my receipts in order so I can get reimbursed for GWW stuff. That sort of thing.

End of a lovely day. Ken worked on the pipes for the pool heater and I did some computer work. Then we worked on our masks for Harvest Tourney, cutting around the edges (in the shape of leaves) and staining them green, cutting out some extra leaves (for that 3-D effect) and staining _them_ green. On Tuesday we’ll start painting them (autumn colours at the edges), and keep working for the rest of the week until they’re done. I also got a little more work done on my cotehardie for the event, putting trim down one side of the front and serging the neckline. Tomorrow I’ll put trim down the other side of the front and around the neckline and hem it; then at some point we’ll refine the sleeve pattern and get the sleeves made and put on. Worst-case scenario, I’ll knock out a pair of plain sleeves and sew them in, then put on the fancy sleeves later.

We watched “Charmed” and “Angel”, and I started beading my slate-blue-and-antique-gold cotehardie. I cut the thing out in Wales, but didn’t have time to put it together before we moved. At some point thereafter, I realised that the fabric cried out to be beaded. This is a nice project in that I don’t have a finish date for it; I’m just going to bead when I have time, and when it’s beaded, I’ll put it together. The beads make all the difference, too.

No actual writing today, but I had a _huge_ epiphany about AETW. Like, a big conflict that will eventually throw the hero and heroine together, and cause her to make a major decision that will break her heart. Heh heh. This will be good. This coming week, I’m going to read what I’ve written so far, because I need a review and also to see that it’s a pretty good book. Not perfect, but better than I remember. This usually happens with drafts lately. I’m convinced the whole thing sucks, and then I read it and discover no, it doesn’t suck. It isn’t perfect, but suckage has not occurred and what’s bad is fixable. And oh, I am very fond of my subconscious right now. Maybe I can even finish the first draft of this sucker in November…

I spent an unconscionable amount of money on eBay today bidding on an out-of-print Larry CD. I got up too late to get the other one I was bidding on, but oh well. The one I got has two songs I love but only have on video, so calloo callay. I’m bidding on yet another, so we’ll see how that goes.

Ken’s off to Portland tomorrow, but just for the day; he’ll be home by about 9:30 p.m. Odd, but better than him being gone for any longer. He’s going to have some minor surgery on Thursday so he’ll be taking Friday off as well.

I want a pair of black angel wings for Samhain. I’ve wanted them for awhile now. I really really really want the massive $450 ones, but they’re just too extravagent. I don’t want little piddly ones, and I’ve found some reasonably priced, reasonably sized ones online (I’ll check one more local store before ordering them). They don’t actually work for the Edward Gorey tea party we’re going to, but I still want them. I’ll wear them on Hallowe’en when we watch “Practical Magic” and give out candy (and/or have a ritual). And then I’ll hang them from the bedpost, as all good dark angels do when they sleep…
