Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Waiting for Our Time

It’s nearly 4 a.m. Years ago I made a pact with myself, never to sew garb for an event the week before that event. Either it was wearable, or it wasn’t going to get made. I’ve blown that pact right out of the water. Last night we sewed until about 2 a.m.; tonight I finished at 3 or so and Ken’s still out there. Since coming inside, I have wrapped all the Twelfth Night presents, shattered a wine glass full of wine all over the counter and floor, and discovered a huge patch of mildew on one wall in the bedroom—which had garb and other SCA stuff piled against it. I cannot face that right now. I’ll throw stuff out on Sunday.

I spent the day copy editing (big surprise) and sewing. Alas, no writing. Nor will there be tomorrow, as we’ll be gone all day at the event. Sunday, though, I’ll be back in the chair. Things will be calmer after this weekend. We had a lot of things coming to a head this weekend, like the garb.

The outfits are stunning, though. Royal blue velvet and pale gold dupioni silk and pale gold satin. Mine’s a cotehardie with big houppelande sleeves (there are manuscript illustrations of such a crossover dress), and Ken’s is a houpelande. His sleeves are lined with a dupioni that has a cross-hatched pattern on it, and at every juncture is a pearl. My undersleeves are that fabric. Absolutely gorgeous stuff. The theme for Twelfth Night is Duc de Berry’s The Tres Riches Heures, hence these particular outfits.

Oh, and I did download the new Styx song, and it’s wonderful. The title is today’s journal entry. If you want to hear the song, go to www.styxworld.com.
