She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Contracted

ALNM: 914

Ken’s off at rapier practise (I declined; my shoulder has been hurting of late, plus I wanted some quiet time to Accomplish Things), but he should be home soon. I’ve written about 500 words on ALNM that just flowed, which was a lovely experience. More to come in the next few minutes, I hope.

Today has been a puttery sort of day. Went to Walmart to pick up pictures (two out of four rolls were ready, it turned out), to PetSmart (so many cute kittens! But I got depressed because the beautiful Turkish Angora mama was still there, unadopted, and people are stupid and don’t neuter their pets, and I can’t adopt them all, and…), and Albertson’s for a few quick things. Worked through more e-mail and GWW stuff. Did some straightening here and there. Watered the lawn and sprayed the roses. That sort of thing.

In other news, it looks like Ken will be going on an emergency trip to Korea to fix an old machine there, then on to Portland for two weeks. There may be another trip to Korea after than, and then one or two trips to Boston (an emergency “help!” trip and a training trip). If he does get all these contract jobs, he’ll make more than his year’s salary (before taxes, of course, and taxes are brutal). So, we won’t have to panic about losing the house or anything. We’ll still have to be reasonably frugal, of course. The best-case scenario will be that the market is indeed picking up (there are rumblings) and that he gets a job in, say, six months. Then we’ll have money to pay off his final student loan, do some more house renovations, buy a few things, and invest.

Still, if he’s going to be gone for three weeks (starting next week), I’m going to miss him like hell.

Would’ve written more on ALNM, but Ken came home, and I got to the end of the scene I was working on, and it’ll be a good place to start tomorrow. Perhaps we’ll watch “Keen Eddie”, which we taped, or we might go to bed, but either way, enough of this rambling ‘til tomorrow.
