She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Inflatable church or Elvis? You decide

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I started the day with a call from the vet that Grimoire started chowing down on food as soon as I left yesterday. They think he was so excited that I was there, that he didn’t want to waste time eating. Given how much he loves to eat, I’m dubious, but it’s a nice thought. I’ll cling to it. So now he’s home, and very happy. His paw is still swollen, ‘though not nearly as much.

Then I packaged up the stuff for Ken and went to mail it. First I discovered that the PO that we normally go to is no longer open on Saturday mornings. A nice man outside reminded me where the main PO is, which was open ‘til 1 (it was about 11:30 at this point), so off I went. First I had to slog through construction and deal with people who don't know how to drive. (Rather than merging steadily, everyone shot to the front and barrelled their way in. I hate SUVs so very much.)

Why are there stupid people in the world? If you're going to mail something, try actually having a box for it _before_ you get to the PO. Even if you're planning on buying a box there, don't ask if they have newspaper "lying around" for you to pad it with, especially after they tell you there's bubble wrap for sale and a newspaper box outside if you really want to buy a newspaper.

And for crying out loud, do not look confused and upset when they tell you that you have to ship your frozen goods in a styrofoam container, rather that wrapped in paper that's already getting soggy!

It was good to get home.

Cat and I then picked up Baja Fresh and settled in for our first movie of the day, “Alex & Emma”. It started slow, but picked up well. It had some truly great lines, and overall, it was quite pleasant. The premise (which doesn’t give much away) is that he’s a writer and she’s a stenographer who’s going to get down his latest novel because he has to finish it in a month. Especially in the beginning, she keeps questioning what he’s writing. “Isn’t it nice that someone doesn’t do that to you when you’re writing?” Cat asked. I laughed bleakly. “It’s called the voices in my head,” I said. “The internal editor. Most writers hear that all the time.”

Now we’re getting some individual work done, and then we’ll watch another movie. I haven’t actually gotten any work done, other than a bit of Quicken stuff, so I’d better hop to it now.

Rejection yesterday from Ideomancer, and one today from F&SF.

Mrph. I’m short the number of abstracts I need to finish the journal I’m editing. I probably won’t get new ones until Monday night at the latest—that’s if Sage is open on Monday—which means I’m going to have to work when Teresa’s here. Darn it. I was really trying to not have to do that.

Well, overall, it’s a lovely day, thanks in large part to the lovely Cat. After I edited, I IMd with Ken for a while (and yes, I hate turning that into a verb, but I don’t know what else to call it!), and then Cat and I determined that we were both starving. We tried to order Chinese food, but the place I had a number and menu for had morphed into another place. We went to the Chinese buffet, but there was a line outside, so we veered away and went to CoCo’s, which wasn’t full of adorable couples (‘though there were a few), and made comments about our rather cute waitress with her little pointy eyebrows, who needed to smile once in a while. (The waitress, not her eyebrows.)

Then we came home and watched “Gun Shy”, and then Ken called, so I did get to chat with him for a few minutes. He might be home as early as two weeks from now! We shall see. If he’s back that early, then he’ll be going out again, but that’s okay. We’re discussing different trips we want to take. He has a BMW friend who has a hotel in Colorado (cross-country skiing! snuggling by a roaring fire!); I was planning to go the BajaProg Festival, so we could take the bike and then do a bit of riding around Baja California; and we’re still trying to get to the Bay Area to see an old friend of his, plus we could add in Monterey (which I love) and Santa Cruz (which I want to see). I totally have the traveling bug right now. I don’t know what sparks it; there are other times when I just want to stay home and build bookshelves and get various projects done.

Cat’s gone to bed, and I think I shall watch “Monk” and go to bed myself. Or type in one of the stories that got lost during the hard drive crash, which I do have a hard copy of. Or something. It’s a lazy holiday type of day.

Check out the inflatable church! Is being married by Elvis more or less tacky? I can’t decide.
