Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Words Written: “In Her Hands” synopsis, ~500 total

Heh. I forgot I wrote an entry on Friday. Well, that makes this entry a little quicker to write, except that all I wrote in my notes for Friday was “I don’t remember.”

I’ll update the rest of the weekend soon. No time now…

It’s beautifully overcast and much cooler today—yum. I still have a headache, though. I worked on the synopsis for “In Her Hands” on the way in to work. The new publisher I’m going to send it to wants a one-page synopsis that shows both emotional and physical conflict. Yeah. In one page. I got it down to a page and a third, and have sent it off for comments.

You know it’s going to be a weird day at work when you’ve discussed Utilikilts before 10 a.m.

I miss Ken. I always miss him, of course (and aren’t you glad I don’t talk about it constantly?) but there are times when I miss him something fierce (and what a good phrase that is, because it is with a fierceness, a sudden wild pang in my heart). I wish he were home, and I were home, and we could go for a walk on the overcast beach and then may be have lunch at Franky’s or Roxsbury Deli before coming home and curling up in the living room with books to read, or snuggling in the media room to watch TV. Today would be a good day to rent movies… And nap. Definitely with the napping.

I do, amazingly, have some good news to counterbalance the three-rejections-in-one-week (yes, I got a third one on Friday): On Saturday I got the e-mail that I’d sold “Hell’s Belles” to DeathGrip: Exit Laughing. So, hurrah for that! It was a fun story to write. Evil debutantes (or is that an oxymoron?).

I just found this lovely “pre-publication” review/comment from the editor of an anthology my story “The Sultan’s Sons” will appear in: “When I went through the stories for the Clash of Steel: Book Two—Assassin there were so many stories that started with a quiet assassin following his prey, followed by the attack, followed by the assassin being the real target. Dozens of stories in a row like this. You want something new and something fresh and I think I got that when I accepted stories from Ramon Rozas III, Erin Hartshorn, Drew Karpyshyn, Lawrence Weinstein, and Dayle Dermatis. I'd like to think that someday these five writers will be at the forefront of the new age in Fantasy and I can say that I helped them in my own small way.”

Aw!

Holy crap on a stick! “Little Bunny Foo Foo” is a Mother Goose rhyme! I had no idea!
