Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Writing Stats: Received and reviewed the proof pages for “Hell’s Belles,” to appear in Deathgrip: Exit Laughing. Received a rejection from Fantasybookspot.com for “A Familiar(‘s) Tale,” and mailed the story out to Grendelsong. Reviewed Teresa’s edits to the Sophie author questionnaire for Virgin and mailed it out.

I haven’t been getting any writing done, alas, although I’ve been doing writing-related stuff. I’m spending a lot of time with my parents, and that’s important. We went out with Morgana, Brian, and Tomi early this afternoon to see The Da Vinci Code. Tonight we took them out to a nice seafood restaurant, Eric Ericsson’s on the Ventura Pier, for their birthday dinners. (They don’t need more “stuff,” and since I knew they’d be visiting, I gave them a promissory for a seafood dinner.) The food was fantastic, and so was the wine (Eos 2003 Chardonnay). We split a crab cakes appetizer that came with mango salsa, and I had roasted chilies stuffed with crab, shrimp, and Jack cheese with a tomatillo cream sauce. My dad had that, too; Ken had fish tacos; and my mom had crab and shrimp quesadillas. Yum!

The Da Vinci Code was good in a “pleasant way to spend an afternoon” sort of way. I guess I read the book pretty quickly, because I’d forgotten parts of it. I hate the changes they made to the ending, and why does Robert end up being the one to solve the anagrams, not Sophie the police cryptographer? (That isn’t a spoiler in any way.) I jumped several times, and laughed out loud a fair amount (British tea jokes!), and that pleased me.
