Socrates Cafe

Well, I finished Socrates Cafe, Christoper Phillips' account of his experiences facilitating public philosophy clubs around the country.

I found his tone a bit too patronizing and touchy-feely at times, though the book and many of the descriptions of philosophical discussions were still interesting.

I'd been thinking about starting up some sort of discussion group related to philosophy even before I'd read the book, and I'm still thinking about it. I'm not sure if I'd want to model it on Phillips' style and approach, which entails prompting questions from the group at the outset and then facilitating an exploration of a particular question (e.g., "What is art?", "What is love?", "Are we really free?", etc.).

Anyway, I'm still thinking about it. It wouldn't cost anything to start...just time and effort. As an informal poll, how many of you out there would show up at your local bookstore or coffee house if you saw an ad for such a weekly event?
