Queer Eye Revisited

Okay, so over the weekend I saw an episode of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

I still stand by what I said before, especially this:

I don't think the portrayal of gays in the media has reached that level of maturity. Gay characters are still primarily in a given script or show for their gayness. That is, they're not really mainstreamed, or seen as a person first and as a gay person second.

I can see the appeal of the show, similar to other shows where either homes or people are being made over. I could especially relate to the single male living alone...since I am one. Most men live very much like wild animals. So it was amusing to see the guy's dirty bathroom, his mish-mash of mismatching furniture, and the lone decaying green pepper in his fridge.

And the "Fab 5" were funny and likeable. But I kept wondering why they necessarily had to be gay men. Could a group of five men and women of whatever sexual orientation, experts in fashion, food, and culture, not do the same thing? And wouldn't the basic appeal of the show remain the same? So why the gimmick?
