Here's the text.


Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom. Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone.


I get how religion requires freedom, but I'm afraid I don't understand the converse. Could someone explain that to me?

Andrew Sullivan thinks this line is directed at non-believers:


Americans tire of those who would jettison their beliefs, even to gain the world.


But it's preceded by this:


Some believe that such a confession of my faith will sink my candidacy. If they are right, so be it. But I think they underestimate the American people. Americans do not respect believers of convenience.


Personally I think it's a dig at Guiliani. I think he's talking about politicians who pretend to be pious to get elected. Dunno.

Not that it matters much...I just can't see Romney getting the nomination.
