MADRID BOMBINGS.

Here from our New York world news headquarters in New York is Connie Chung.

CC: Good morning. Madrid, and at least 2 other cities, Vallecas and Pozo Del Cito, Spain were hit with a series of terrorist bombings on commuter trains during the rush hour Thursday morning. At least thirty people… we now have confirmed that at least 62 people were killed in the blasts. All were workers on their way to their jobs in the city.

The bombings occurred between 7:30 and 8 am. Some estimates put the number of bombs at at least 12 in the three cities. Madrid’s main train station had at least 5 bombings in a quarter hour with one train rigged with 3 bombs.

Madrid’s emergency medical response system is overwhelmed and city busses are being used as ambulances to transport the hundreds of injured in Madrid, alone.

No group has taken responsibility for the bombings but Basque separatists are suspected, although these attacks do not fit their usual pattern of calling to warn innocents of impending blasts. The separatists also do not usually pick such large civilian targets.
Some experts in Europe are asking if Al Quiada could have been responsible.

To recap this breaking story: The death toll is mounting by the minute in Spain in this worst terrorist attack in the countries history. There are now at least 65 confirmed dead and hundreds wounded in multiple bombings in Spain just three days before the national elections there.
