SPAIN UPDATE

Now from our New York World New Headquarters in New York is Connie Chung.

CC: Good morning. Now a brief update on the breaking news story we told you about earlier this morning.

The death toll is still climbing in Spain’s worst ever terrorist attack. 10 bombs in three locations ripped commuter trains apart during Thursday’s rush hour.

At this hour the number of dead is placed at more than 190 and the wounded number over 1000.

The Christian Science Monitor reporter on the scene said there is an eerie calm in Madrid now and stated the most moving sight, for him, was in a temporary morgue set up in an abandoned business near the largest blast sight. Scores of dead bodies in a large room with the only sound, the ringing of their cell phones as friends and relatives frantically call to see if their loved ones escaped the carnage.

The Spanish government is still holding ETA, a Basque separatist group, responsible even though this attack is larger and more complex than anything they have tried in the past. ETA also, usually, tries to avoid innocent bystander fatalities by calling authorities to warn them of impending attacks.
Obviously that did not happen today and no group has claimed responsibility.

Some European leaders are trying to determine if Al Quaida might be behind this attack in reprisal for Spain’s participation, with the United States, in the war in Iraq and other police actions in the middle east
.
As we leave you now the death toll once again rises, now 195 students and workers dead in what may be the worst terrorist act on the European continent, certainly the deadliest attack in Spain’s history.
