STBREAKING NEWS: TENET RESIGNS AS CIA CHIEF.

Here from our New York World News Headquarters in New York is Connie Chung.

CC: Good morning to the west coast and good afternoon to the east coast. George Tenet, CIA Director for seven years, the first CIA director to serve under two administrations in 27 years, resigned today sighting ‘personal reasons’.

In an emotional farewell, broadcast to CIA personnel worldwide and made available to network and cable TV by the CIA, Tenet stated that he (quote) “Lived in the heart of the CIA family”. And that “…this was a difficult decision…” that he was leaving with “…sadness, but with head held high…”. Tenet said he will now spend more time with his wife and son. Tenet said that the CIA stands for everything good in this country “Goodness” and “Family” were words he used to describe the United States and the CIA.

President Bush said that George Tenet was leaving for personal reasons and was a strong leader in the war on terror. When it was suggested that the CIA chief’s resignation may be more political than personal the President said he (Tenet) was “leaving for personal reasons…” and “I’m sorry he’s leaving…”

The presumptive Democratic candidate, John Kerry, praised Tenet but also stated that under his watch there were many failures and that maybe he was being “sacrificed” by the current administration for those failures.

It’s interesting to note that on Capital Hill more Republicans were critical of Tenet than Democrats today.
Here to discuss this sudden turn of events is ST contributor Henry Kissinger.

HK: Hello Connie Chung.

CC: Doctor Kissinger, George Tenet’s sudden departure raises questions about whether this was a personal decision or was he bowing to pressure.
