IRAQI HANDJOB

Reporting from our New York World News Headquarters in New York is a Senior fellow at Fellows and Gals University: Connie Chung.

CC: Good morning. The handover of Iraqi sovereignty is now complete in a surprise move two days early. We had some inkling that the time and date might have moved up but everybody in the media was taken by surprise by this morning’s handover.
Paul Bremer, the senior American in the country, handled the handover and almost immediately left Iraq. Many questions remain in the aftermath of this historic ceremony.
Here on our ST liveline is Sunny Bright, who was one of the first journalist to report this, from Baghdad, Iraq.
Sunny, what’s the mood in the country now that Iraqi’s are self governing?

KB: Good evening Connie. It’s Kelly Bright.

CC: Yes. Go ahead.

KB: Well, Baghdad is relatively quiet today. There are pockets of celebration, but this was so secret and so private, that it took people by surprise.

CC: Are the Iraqi’s capable of security in the country?

KB: No. American troops, thousands of them, are still here and will probably be here for three to five years, assisting the Iraqi’s.

CC: Interesting. So, as of today, where do you go for policy questions, and comments on actions that take place in the country?

KB: The Americans, who will defer to the Iraqi’s, then answer the question.

CC: Thanks Sunny, we’ll stay in touch.

KB: It’s Kel…

CC: Now lets talk to our guest, Oscar nominated actor Omar Sharif.

OS: Hello Connie.

CC: Hello. Mister Sharif. Your Egyptian.

OS: Yes.

CC: But in many films, like “Hidalgo”, you play an Iraqi or Iranian or Arabian.

OS: Yes.

CC: How do you feel today?

OS: Well, I’m fine. I think this is a good thing.

CC: Interesting. Do you think this a good thing for that region of the world?

OS: Yes, a good thing, for the region, of the world.

CC: Do you think the sheiks you’ve played in films would think this is a good thing?

OS: Uhh… well, I guess so. I dunno, uhh, yes, I suppose.

CC: Thank you Sheik Omar Sharif.

OS: What?

CC: Well there you have it. The Iraqi’s and Americans eloped in a shotgun wedding that made Iraq sovereign with America still in control of this, now sovereign nation.
We’ll have more. For now I’m Connie Chung along with Sunny Bright and the Sheik saying so long for now.
