World News Review

Here is Connie Chung.

CC: Good morning and welcome to ST World New Review.
We start today in Santiago, Chili where President Bush attended a 21 nation conference. The event was underscored with bizarre security problems.
Our Bill Pullman is there.

BP: Yes, Connie. The event got off to a bizarre start on Saturday night when the Secret Service detail surrounding the President got into a tussle when they were not allowed into a banquet being attended by the President. As he was entering the banquet, President Bush looked behind him to see the members of the secret service detail in a shoving match with Chilean security. The President went to the area where the fight broke out, reached into the group of 6 men and picked up his personal bodyguard and lifted him out off the floor by his jacket and stared in disbelief as the agent adjusted himself.

CC: Amazing.

BP: This crap never happens, but it did. Then last night the Chilean government disinvited 200 guests to a dinner for the President when they got offended at having to go through metal detectors.

CC: How did this happen?

BP: A lack of diplomatic cajoling Connie. The United States did not work with, or try to explain their actions, leaving the host country to feel their guests were disrespecting them.

CC: A brawl at a State function and a state dinner cancelled because of the arrogance of the American delegation?

BP: Yeah well, get used to it.

CC: Now onto New York where the National Basketball League imposed it’s worst punishment ever on a player.
Friday night at an Indiana Pacer- Detroit Pistons basketball game a tussle on the court escalated when several players headed into the stands and attacked fans. The fight turned into an unruly affair with fans being punched, kicked and hit and players being pelted with beer, food, and souvenirs.
One player, Ron Artest of Indiana was suspended for the remainder of the long NBA season, 4 other Indiana players were suspended and fined as well. As were 4 players on the Detroit roster.
The fight was a shock to the most seasoned sports watchers and the NBA commissioner said “this will never happen again”.
The Detroit Pistons coach Larry Brown said “We lost our heart and soul” with this incident that escalated after fans called the players names and tried to douse them with beer.

Now onto Wisconsin where a dispute over a tree ended in five deaths.
Our Jim Farris is there. Jim…

JF: Yes Connie. Sunday, here in a picturesque small town, a dispute over a tree involving deer hunters escalated into a fight that left five dead, and three injured.
The incident happened when two hunters were returning to their rural cabin on private property from a day of hunting. They spotted a man in the tree and a confrontation took place. Shooting followed. Fiver are dead.
The sheriff out here said the “suspect” (now dead) was sniping at the victims with an assault rifle.
“He was chasing after them and killing them” he said.
Connie.

CC: The President breaks up a fight involving Secret Service agents, The NBA breaks up the worst brawl in American sports history, and five deer hunters are dead after shooting and killing each other over a tree.
I’m so glad the Moral Majority is in charge of the country.
Be seeing you.
