He'll think about paint and he'll think about glue / what a jolly boring thing to do

Despatch office work isn't that easy to be good at because frankly everyone thinks their needs are the greatest in the world and will insist you drop whatever you're doing and help them out. Despite that, I love my current temp job. I get paid, the people there are pretty easy-going, and they know I pitch in where I can. There are worse jobs. I'd know, as I've had them.

The past two days have been pretty good, though, because there wasn't much to be done in the office. In between long periods of dullness while manning the phone, I was able to do some writing, which is always fun. Extra characters crept in and refused to leave, more levels of detail -- it may all turn out to be crap, but I had fun all the same.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that my handwriting is awful. Strong men have broken down and wept while trying to decipher it, people with fancy degrees have resolved to search every barrow and earthworks in this country for some kind of Rosetta Stone to help them make sense of my runes. Despite that, I found that writing by hand was a great way to get the creative juices flowing (oo-er). I can see why Harlan Ellison uses a typewriter rather than a computer. You have to consider what to commit to the page, while with a word processor you can edit as you go, delete, insert, etc; it's tempting to say 'that bit's crap but it'll do; I can change it in a few minutes'.
