Do What You Love....

You hear it all the time, "Do what you love and the money will follow." I think to a certain extent this is true. However, not all careers pay as well as one another. Maybe the saying should go, "Do what you love and the rewards will follow."

In Zen there is a saying, "The richest man is the man with the fewest needs." For a man to have few needs he would need to be fulfilled. When we are fulfilled we do not want for very much - maybe the basics: shelter, food, water, companionship (although some might argue this last one).

If being rich is being fulfilled, than doing what you love is a formula for success. Absolutely, do the things you love to do. That is what we are here for. I've noticed, however, that not everyone has a marketable passion. So, there's rich and then there's money rich. Ideally, a combination of the two would be nice. But, again, not always possible.

What do you do when you can't find your passion? It's always a good idea to examine your childhood dreams and interests. There are typically many great clues lying about there. But if all you can come up with is "shopping" and "spa treatments," then maybe it's time to consider finding an occupation that will at least compliment your personality; pay you enough to support your desired lifestyle; and, equally importantly, leave you enough time to do the things you truly love to do.

But I believe this last suggestion to be a last resort - though not a bad way to go. Before you give up on creating a dream life, I'd give your dreams a serious run for their money. Think, "What do I like?" Then think, "Is there any way I can make a living doing that?" Use your imagination - then use it again. Think outside the box. Just because no one has ever done what you're considering doing doesn't mean that it can't be done. Maybe nobody's ever figured out how to do it. Exhaust your imagination. Give it time. Meditate on it. Sleep on it. Don't let fear dissuade you. Fear is nearly always bad counsel.

One last piece of advice: Do what you do best. Chances are it's something you, at the very least, like if not love doing (otherwise you probably wouldn't be so good at it.) Maybe you haven't figured out what it is that you're best at. Take a good look at your life. Look for the things that have historically been easy for you. See if any of these have also been fun or rewarding for you in some way. When you take this kind of inventory, life's tough questions like, "What should I do to make a living?" become answerable.
