team of 'ghostbusters' will descend on Devonport Naval Base tomorrow after persistent reports of paranormal activity in South Yard. Armed with night-vision cameras, laser thermometers, dowsing rods and hi-tech sound detection equipment, the team of 20 will spend Friday and Saturday nights gathering evidence. The Royal Navy agreed to let them in the base following decades of reports of ghostly goings-on inside listed 18th century buildings at the historic South Yard.

These include sightings of a young girl, aged between five and 10 years dressed in Victorian costume, seen playing with her toys in the 18th century Master Ropemaker's House, reportedly one of Plymouth's most haunted houses. Naval security staff have seen lights going on and off in the house even though it has been empty for four years, and a bearded 18th century sailor has also been seen.

Nearby, in the Hangman's Cell in the Ropery, where more than 100 men were executed, hardened naval ratings have been spooked and scared by a strange 'atmosphere'.
