Oh. My. Good. God.

I was flipping through the channels last night and landed on Last Comic Standing, the first episode of which I'd seen a few weeks ago, and was excited. The whole premise of the show is that you take a bunch of comedians and whittle them down through competition until only one is left, kind of like (and I'm loathe to use this comparison) American Idol for stand-up comedy. Whoever wins gets money (I don't know how much), and a contract with NBC for a sitcom. Plus, it's hosted by Jay Mohr, who is one of my favorite comics. The premiere two-part episode was a competition on both coasts; a whole bunch of comedians would do a three minute set at either Caroline's Comedy Club or The Laugh Factory, and ten contestants were chosen from each venue to go to Las Vegas for further whittling.

So far I'm okay with this premise. While I'm not crazy about the American Idol format, the comedy made up for it. If you can make me laugh, I can be easy to forgive. This first show was the last one I saw, and I thought it would be a relatively short run mini-series, maybe a month long. But nooooooooo. They had to go and cock everything up.

Instead of a simple tournament structure, they had to go and turn it into a Real World/Survivor/Big Brother piece of crap format. Apparently, the people that were left after the Vegas competition all went to live in a house together, and are now all scheming against each other and forming coalitions. It makes me sick. I got my hopes up, thinking this would be a cool original show, but they're just rehashing the same old reality-based garbage. Dammit.

So who knows if I'll keep watching. Either way, I'm rooting for Dat Phan to win. He has a tremendous amount of talent, and he genuinely seems to want it the most. He's very much the underdog, and I hope he kicks everyone else's butts.
