I'm currently embroiled in story revisions. Looking over all the comments I got at the Oregon Workshop for my story "Last Fare" and trying to boil down the ones I can use, the ones that'll make the story sing. I've been doing some more research on Bali and Indonesia lately, trying to give the tale an authentic feel. Today's mythologism (after a sad four days of inactivity) is an attempt to get myself back in the setting, feeling the humidity, the stagnant heat, the destruction, the rage in my fictionalized Bali. (It's also told from a different viewpoint than the one in "Last Fare," which is a good exercise.)

This past week was spent in varying amounts of pain, from annoying to excruciating. The muscles from where the neck meets the base of the skull down to the ribs on my left side groaned and occasionally screamed as the tension embedded deep within got better or worse. There was one night when I couldn't sleep on my left side, and even the act of breathing hurt. I sometimes get stress/tension headaches like these during the semester, when papers are due, or exams are creeping up, but the Fall semester doesn't even start for another ten days. I can't imagine what I would be stressed about. It got to the point where I was seriously considering checking in to the emergency room, and then, the pain eased, and I once again could turn my head and take a breath or sneeze without yelping. Two things seemed to help: Tiger Balm and sex. Menthol and endorphins; something to remember for next time.

On Thursday, Janet and I will head to Charlotte. Her most recent round of paperwork went through and she made an appointment to get her biometrics (read: fingerprints) done. I'm not sure if she'll get her work permit, green card, or permanent residency at this point, but I hope it's at least one of the three.

And over at her journal, she's posted links to all sorts of hamster fun.
