What makes islands float?


If it wasn't a joke, well ...

Here is Marilyn's answer:

In fact, islands don't float. If they did, they wouldn't stay in the same place. Islands belong to two main categories. A continental island is actually attached to the mainland but is entirely surrounded by water. Manhattan is an example. By contrast, the Hawaiian Islands are oceanic. They arise from -- and are connected to -- the ocean floor.
