Gender identity

Yesterday we were watching something on Noggin and they had one of those bits in between shows with Moose A. Moose and Zee. Zee had a train and it was about sharing.

Marc said something about someone taking away "his" (Zee's) train. Zee is a girl - she has a flower on her head and Moose A. Moose refers to her as "she", but Zee doesn't speak so you can't tell by either name or voice.

It got me to wondering whether Marc assumed Zee was male because he is a boy (though I don't think he much knows the difference between boys & girls). Or did he assume Zee was male because society assigns the masculine gender to those whose gender we don't know. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. ;)
