"In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed." Kahlil Gibran

the money changers

I went into town yesterday to pick up a couple of things to make an Easter basket for my grandchild. I guess I must be gettin old because I was absolutely flabbergasted by what I saw.

There were rows and rows and rows of candy...so many varities it made choices nearly impossible. And there were bunnies..chicks...ducks...all stuffed and fluffy. And basket upon basket...and who knows what else lined the shelves?

Its as if the only reason for Easter was to part the consumer from his/her hard earned money. I didn't see anything that indicated this was a Holy Day.

Its the same way with Christmas...very little concern about the actual event that brought about the celebration, but lots of concern about how to get the cash outta your pocket.

I am not a religious zealot, however, I do think we've lost something as a society when the dollar bill supercedes all else.

I did end up getting a few things for the granddaughter, but it will not be the candy and goodies that most kids get.
Some socks, a couple of pens for school, a bottle of bubbles and one very small chocolate bunny.

Thinking about all this takes me back to my childhood days when we were happy to get an orange for Christmas and a special cake for the Easter dinner table.

Yep...I'm definitely getting old...I sound more like the elderly patients I used to take care than I would like to admit.

But, time marches on, things change, and it was probably Elvis and that dang rock and roll music that destroyed civilization as I knew it. My parents said it would.
