I would just like to spread the word that my colleague and friend, Carl, successfully defended his Ph.D thesis today. Yay! He gave a wonderful talk on his topic, "Dust Destruction in Expanding Circumstellar Envelopes." I'm very proud.

I recall the day I defended my Ph.D. thesis. What I remember most is how exhausted I was afterwards. I had taught a physics recitation and lab and held a help-study hour right up until the time of my talk. I couldn't believe that the day had finally come. I was so glad when it was over.

And yet, knowing that I have a Ph.D. in physics doesn't make me feel smarter. It somehow emphasizes how much I do not know. I guess acknowledging weakness is the first step on the road to recovery. Have fun travelling that road, Carl.
