The final tally for 2003 was 64 books read. Not many made a huge impact on me, but here are the ones that stand out in my memory:

  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - J. K. Rowling - I've said it previously, and I'll say it again, Professor Snape is probably the most interesting character in series fiction right now. And Professor Umbridge, one of the most evil. I eagerly await the next installment.
  • Abhorsen - Garth Nix - This is the final book in the trilogy starting with Sabriel and continuing with Lirael. Nix paints a richly textured world in an unobtrusive way and embues young characters with depth and dignity while remembering the uncertainties of youth. I read everything Nix writes.
  • The Book of Courtesans - Susan Griffin - This was a very interesting read, detailing the lives of famous courtesans throughout history. Anyone who studies women's history should enjoy it.
  • Ilium - Dan Simmons - This book rekindled my love of Simmons' writing. I can't believe I hadn't read any of his work in years. Argh! When will Olympos be published?!?!?!

I'm on book number two for 2004 already - I hope this will be as good a year as the past few. Happy Reading!
