Greg has not even been away for a day, and my body is already screaming "sleep is for the weak!". He'll be back Monday night, so hopefully my sleep cycle won't get too messed up while he's at WorldCon.

The second week of classes is winding down. I seem to have a good crop of kids so far, and I've already heard some nice feedback from the students. Comments like:

I really enjoyed your physics class immensely last year.

You're not teaching physics this semester? That's a big loss for the physics students.

Hi, you were my physics TA several years ago.

After your physics class, I decided to take astronomy to see if I want to be a physics or astronomy major. (Ha! I have him now!)

Hi, I'm B.P.'s mom.

I'm J.C.'s cousin, and he told me to take this class.

I'm N.S.'s fiance, and she told me to take this class because you're the best teacher she's ever had.

I've also had two declarations of love - one because I signed an override for a man, the other because I let a young man switch into a different lab for the week so he could attend a concert. (Truth be told, I was afraid that if he didn't go to the concert, he'd burst into song during class, and since we're talking Phil Collins....yeech.)

Scariest comment so far - I accidentally "eclipsed" a student's experiment the other night, and when I apologized for getting in the way, he responded, "What better heavenly body to look at?" Egads, the sucking-up is starting early this semester.

I do have four sets of siblings taking my classes who look similar enough to actually be twins. Three sets in one lecture alone!

But nobody burst into tears when I told them that their astrological sign was wrong. I did geek out a bit over Copernicus, Kepler, and the scientific method today. The students looked kind of ashamed to know me at that point. But I should just state for the record that I never mentioned the release of the Star Wars DVDs when discussing the autumnal equinox (Sept 21). It was soooooooo tempting, though.
