As of my last entry, I've started talking about my weight loss. I have to get used to talking about it because it became a topic of conversation at work last week - not of my doing, but the secretaries are kinda gossipy and I do look noticeably different. Anyways, here's the whole story:

A ways back, I lost weight through exercise and eating less. Then I gained it all back (and then some). In August, I decided to make a serious lasting effort at controlling my weight, which is a problem that plagues my entire family. I knew I could do it, because I had before, but I really want to make it stick this time. I knew I needed to work in time for exercise and also learn appropriate portion sizes. So I arranged my teaching schedule so I could go to the gym in the mornings, and I joined Weight Watchers Online. WW has been amazingly helpful - I can't express my gratitude enough. WW provides a target for food intake in a day, rewards exercise by allowing you to eat more, and changes those goals with your weight-loss, There is also an online recipe builder which allows me to calculate values for my recipes, and then divide them up into healthy-sized portions. I only participate online, as I figured any time going to a meeting would be better spent at the gym, for me. It also allows me to keep track of my stats easily - I can make graphs! Geek weight-loss nirvana! So, this is how I've lost 31 lbs in six months:

  • I eat less. It's amazing how many of my admittedly decadent cooking tendencies I still can have, just by making a batch of pasta last for six servings instead of four.
  • I go to the gym 3-5 times per week for at least one hour: 30 min cardio, 30 min weightlifting/abs
  • I typically try to fit in two martial arts classes per week

If anyone wants to lose weight, I do recommend WW. It gave me exactly what I needed - more incentive to exercise and guidance for portion sizes. I'm hoping these lessons will stick with me.
