prickings

Whew.

I have reduced the novella's word count by 3,000 words. "Prickings" is now 15,000 words long.

It was the same with "Bison's Child". I could only remove about 3,000 words there.

I look at my writing style and shake my head. I have a long way to go, a great deal to learn. I think it's possible for me to improve; I'm still pretty young, but some days it seems so daunting.

I've heard some really good writers say, "Wow -- so and so is such a great writer. I wish I could write that well." And I think, "Wow -- I wish I could write as well as you."

I write a damn good academic/research paper, however. It took a long time and studying and honing my skills to be able to do that, and I haven't been writing fiction really for very long at all. Need to give myself time, and be patient.

Though I don't know that I'll ever be as good as I want to be :), but I may be able to hit "good enough" :).
