sources for writers

I met another speculative fiction writer the other night. She writes science fiction, she thinks.

We had a very enlightening conversation. I'm debating about whether or not to blog about it. If I do I may do it privately and offer a password or put it up for a short period of time.

In any event, she's just a tad older than I, has written three "science fiction" novels, and is looking for an agent. And wasn't familiar with all the available online resources for writers, particularly writers of speculative fiction. She asked for suggestions.

I have given her a big old long list of stuff, including online workshops/critique groups like Hatrack and Critters, blogs (e.g. Elizabeth Bear and Jay Lake and John Scalzi and Caitlin R. Kiernan), writing counsel from people like Robert J. Sawyer, and information on Clarion, Bootcamp, Odyssey, and other IRL workshops.

What are some of your favorite writing resources? Online and in print and everything in between welcome. Don't be afraid to be basic or think, "Oh, everyone knows that site."
I may find it useful, and I can guarantee this woman will.

She sent the first four chapters of one of her novels for me to read...

I think we'll be sending along some book suggestions, too. You know, like John Gardner and Orson Scott Card's Character and Viewpoint and so on.
