Absurd Signage

Well, this little sign isn't making it into any videos yet . . . but I took it because it was positively absurd. It was part of a display explaining how three men from Coronado's expedition tried to reach the canyon floor, and failed. (Of course, their native American guides had been up and down zillions of times; I'd love to know why the knowledge of how to do it never got passed to the Spaniards . . . Did they not tell? Did the Spaniards not listen?)

At any rate, here's the sign:

In case you can't read that last line, it is, "Coronado failed to find wealth, but his expedition opened a new era for the land they explored, and for the people they met." Yeah, really! The era of smallpox!! Just cracked me up, it did.

Sort of like the sign in the Maswik Lodge gift store, which offers some actual pawned jewelry for sale . . . there's a sign explaining how the process of pawning stuff works, and it concludes with something like, "Many native peoples use pawning as a way to raise money." Like, duh! Lots of people without jobs or with no money pawn stuff! It's not just for native Americans any more!!

I'm sure I'm not conveying the sense of what I mean, but in both cases, it seemed as though the verbal reality was light-years away from the reality you could see and feel (or imagine, I guess) . . .
