Well, I have two bits of good news today. The first is that there have been sightings of the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker down in the bayous of somewhere down where there are bayous . . . (Check NPR for actual, factual information :). This is good news because, apparently, the bird has been thought to be extinct since the 40s, because of the deforestation of the cypress trees that are its natural habitat. So here's a sign that the bayous are recovering from said deforestation. In a world filled with warnings about global warming and pollution of all kinds, it's nice to think that maybe not all our mistakes are fatal . . .

And second. More relevant to me. My peony plant is back!! It got mowed down accidentally at the end of the summer last year . . . got mowed right down to the ground, and I was really worried that that's the last we'd see of it. I love peonies; I'd fill the yard with them but there are very few places in the yard (front or back) where there's enough sunlight for them. I was really happy to see it. We immediately put a tomato cage over it, as a temporary measure until we can encircle its "spot" with rocks, so it doesn't get mowed again . . .

I was happy to get two hopeful reminders about resilience. Two living things, keepin' on keepin' on, with no knowledge or forethought about the future, just makes me think that if I keep putting one foot steadfastly in front of the other, I'll arrive at a better place.
