The Domain Name Game

Grr. I got a new web hosting service (www.streamhoster.com) because [a] I already had a streaming video account with them and [b] my old web hosting service was inadequate for many reasons, not the least of which was that their tech support sucks. Also, they offer PHP and MySQL, but accessing that service is difficult . . .

So I got the new host and cancelled the old one, and now I have to switch my domain so that it points to the proper domain name server (ie, the one at my new host). This is a ridiculously convoluted process!! First I had to get my old host to make me the administrator on my account; the old host registered my domain name, so they were the administrators. Bah! I spent about twenty minutes on the phone with tech support getting that taken care of.

They then sent me an email telling me what to do next - apparently my domain name is registered at Network Solutions, so I hadda go to their site, and fill out a form to create an account there. Now I'm waiting for an email from them, giving me instructions for how to complete the transfer . . . and apparently the transfer can't be completed until I fax -- FAX!!! -- them proof of my identity. And even then, it's going to take up to three business days.

I'm really bummed about this. It's not a big deal, I know: but my new host offers so-ooOOoooo much in the way of website features that I can't wait to get in and play with them. In addition to the MySQL and PHP stuff (which looks really easy to use), they offer discussion boards, chatrooms, a shopping cart, image galleries, and all sorts of things you can add on to your website with just a few clicks. This could be really fun!!!

But, alas.

I'm still waiting for the email with the further instructions.

Maybe I'll go out and buy a fax phone while I'm waiting . . .
